The Canaanite People of the Ancient Near East

The Amorites were among the most formidable of the Canaanite peoples, and their story is written into the very hills of the Levant. We've walked the ancient roads of Syria, Lebanon, and northern Israel where they established their cities and kingdoms. This map shows their heartland - from the Orontes River in the north to the hills of Samaria in the south. In the Bible, they’re often depicted as adversaries of the Israelites, from the time of Abraham to the conquest under Joshua. Yet their legacy is more than conflict: they were skilled builders, traders, and administrators. Cities like Mari and Ebla bear witness to their advanced civilization.
