The golden sands of Sudan hide one of Africa's greatest civilizations: Ancient Nubia. We've sailed the Nile south from Aswan into the heart of what was once the Kingdom of Kush, a rival and sometimes ally of Egypt. This map traces Nubia’s key sites - from the temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II to intimidate his southern neighbors, to the royal city of Meroe with its distinctive pyramid tombs. For centuries, Nubia was a source of gold, ivory, and ebony for Egypt, and later, the Kushite kings would rule Egypt itself as the 25th Dynasty. We’ve stood in the temples of Jebel Barkal and walked the ruins of Napata, feeling the weight of history in this often-overlooked region.
