The Ten Cities of the Roman East
The Decapolis - a league of ten Greco-Roman cities - was a center of trade, culture, and learning in the eastern Roman Empire. We’ve visited several of these cities, from Gerasa (Jerash) in Jordan, with its stunning Roman ruins, to Gadara (Umm Qais), where Jesus cast out the Legion of demons. This map shows all ten cities, including Damascus, Philadelphia (Amman), and Scythopolis (Beit She’an), which were connected by Roman roads. For New Testament readers, the Decapolis was the region where Jesus performed miracles and where early Christians spread the Gospel. Travelers to Jordan, Syria, and Israel can use this map to explore the remains of these once-great cities.
