Anointing, as a biblical concept, isn't abstract theology in this part of the world - it's a practice with a visible, unbroken thread running through African religious and political history.
What Anointing Means in the Biblical Text
Throughout the Old Testament, anointing with oil marks the setting apart of kings, priests, and prophets for a specific, sacred purpose - Samuel anointing Saul and later David, priests consecrated for temple service, all using the same ritual act to signify divine appointment rather than personal achievement. The underlying idea is one of authority and calling that originates outside the individual, conferred rather than earned.
Solomon, Sheba, and a Legacy Carried Into Ethiopia
Ethiopian tradition holds that Menelik I, son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, carried both the Ark of the Covenant and a form of Solomonic legitimacy back to Aksum, establishing a dynasty that Ethiopian emperors traced their authority to for nearly three thousand years, up until the fall of the monarchy in the twentieth century. Ethiopian imperial coronations historically included anointing rituals modeled explicitly on this biblical precedent, a detail that struck us as remarkable continuity the first time we learned it.
The Ethiopian Eunuch and a Different Kind of Calling
The Book of Acts describes the Ethiopian eunuch's baptism following his encounter with Philip, an episode Ethiopian Christian tradition treats as a foundational, almost anointing-like moment for the country's relationship with the faith itself. It's a smaller-scale story than royal coronation, but it carries the same underlying biblical logic - a moment of being set apart, marking a before and after.
Coptic Egypt and the Oil of Chrism
Within Coptic Orthodox tradition in Egypt, the sacrament of Chrismation uses consecrated oil in a practice directly descended from biblical anointing rituals, applied during baptism and other key religious rites. Visiting an active Coptic monastery in Wadi Natrun, we watched a small portion of this tradition play out during a baptismal service, a modern echo of a ritual with roots running back thousands of years.

What we find most compelling about tracing anointing through Africa's biblical history is how consistently the concept persisted as lived religious practice, not just scripture confined to a page. From Aksum's coronation rituals to Coptic sacraments still performed today, the idea of a sacred, divinely-marked calling never really faded from this part of the world - it simply kept adapting to new eras.
Visiting the Living Tradition
Aksum's churches and the nearby stelae field offer the most direct physical connection to this history, particularly around major religious festivals when the weight of tradition becomes visible in public ceremony. Coptic monasteries in Egypt's Wadi Natrun remain active and open to respectful visitors, offering a rare, close look at rituals with a continuous line back to the biblical practices they still reference today.
